Cameras aren’t set to photograph just a certain type of thing; as in there is not just one kind of camera to take pictures of babies, and another for black and white… It depends more on the lens; like using a landscape (wide angle) lens for portraits would be a bad idea because it would cause distortions in the persons… If you are really into the photography; and are wondering about a good combo of camera and lens for those 4 different things; I’d suggest a Pentax K-5 (or the less expensive K-7, OR EVEN the K-r)… and a Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 lens. The 24mm of that lens will give you good enough wide angle landscape shots; while the f/2.8 and 70mm end can give you sharp and great portraits (babies…) And you can also make the camera take black and white photos in the camera; or you can just edit the photos later on and add black and white to them.

Why not give it a shot? Sure alot of people can take decent photographs..but how many can take the “holy sh** that pic’s awesome!” type of photos? Anyway, at the very least, you’ll learn a little bit about how to run a business. Speaking of that, one book you might wanna check out– “The E-Myth Revisited: Why Most Small Businesses Fail, and What to do About it”. VERY informative book for someone who’s thinking about starting a small business.

Should I start my own business in photography? I work at a portrait studio now and have been in photography for the last 8 years, part of me wants to go to school and learn enough about photography and how to run a small business. The other part is worried that photography is a dying business with so many people doing their own photography with digital cameras & photoshop. Is it worth all that school ,money & time?

You are thinking about food photography. You can buy a Canon SLR digi ( Canon Rebel is fragile, but is good for biginners) and use the same lenses of your 35mm. You need good lenses , but “light” is very important because of real colors, so, a good equipment will be necessary, You can try tungsten light who is cheap then flash unit, or rent a flash equipment, some studios rent area with light. The second part of job today is develop your photos ( you must photograph using raw format, advertising sometimes don?t accept low format ) on good software and calibrated equipment, like monitor. I use Macintosh ( Apple ) with photoshop (adobe.com) and excellent monitor. Think about a basic light food course. good luck
